6 days of skiing

On this 6-day sail and ski adventure, you cruise into the Lyngen Alps fjord wilderness for an unforgettable week of back-country skiing. You'll be sailing through the dramatic Arctic scenery of fjords and steep snow-covered mountains rising straight from the ocean, and encounter pristine untouched slopes with spectacular 360° panoramic views.

With 6 full days of skiing, you’ll encounter an array of snow conditions and a variety of slopes depending on your group's ski interests and ability levels. Skiing in the Lyngen Alps is an experience like no other – with dramatic mountains towering over fjords, glaciers and valleys, it feels truly wild and remote. The snow here is dry and powdery, perfect for getting those powder turns!

What could be better than ski touring through the magical untouched wilderness, above the arctic circle, to then be greeted onboard with an apres ski drink and snack, a dip in the ocean and a hot tub session outside? Each day you’ll have time to stretch, take naps, look for wildlife, and recharge. Then, when the night falls, the aurora borealis might appear in the dark, starlit sky.  With local mountain guides, ski touring in the Lyngen Alps is very accessible and your safety is our top priority.

A backcountry ski expedition is best experienced on an extraordinary ship that provides flexibility and safety. S/Y Stella Oceana is an ice-class ship that has the most spacious exterior decks and interior saloon of any sailing yacht in Northern Norway.  This offers small groups of only 6 skiers a luxurious experience on a 100-foot floating ski lodge that will bring you right to the footsteps of Europe's best back-country skiing.

The carefully crafted food menu is ever-changing, inspired by Norwegian traditions and local, ethical, fresh and organic ingredients. All the food will not only satisfy your tastebuds but will also fuel you up for the mountains. There may be opportunities to try fishing and eat your fresh catch onboard.

On top of the epic skiing, food and state-of-the-art sailing yacht, the crew of Stella Oceana will always ensure that you are well taken care of throughout your entire trip. From bringing you warm drinks, wool blankets and pillows outside, to going the extra mile to help you take care of your ski equipment, they are there to serve you even when you least expect it.

Welcome abroad to your floating ski lodge! We'll meet in Tromsø in front of Hotel With. Your captain and first mate will show you around and let you settle in. As we depart from the harbour, enjoy the views from the top deck with a hot drink and your camera in hand. After a night at anchor, rise to hot coffee and sip while savouring the wintery mountain views on deck. Mornings are ideal for wildlife sightings and photography before the skiing begins. Over the next 6-days, you’ll be skiing in some of Europe's best snow conditions with endless terrain options. Your guides will provide local knowledge of weather, wind conditions and snowpack to help you decide where skiing is the best today. You’ll pack your gear, and check your skis then dinghy ashore for 4-8 hours of earning your turns. Each day provides the option to pick a new spot, drop anchor, and head to the next peak. You'll experience everything from dry Arctic powder to perfect spring corn snow or even glacier skiing. With quality snow and a reliable snowpack until late in the season, there are endless backcountry skiing and split-boarding options on the Lyngen Peninsula. As the day draws to a close, we enjoy apres ski snacks and drinks, a polar dip and a relaxing sit in the hot tub. Nourishing, local dinners on board ensure you’re fueled for more skiing tomorrow. Evenings are often calm, making them an ideal time to move to the next day's skiing location. It’s also a great time to watch for wildlife, practice photography, and enjoy the outdoor hot tub under the wintery skies. After 6-days of exploring this winter wonderland, we finally arrive back in Tromsø. We offload ski gear and luggage, say our goodbyes and head back to the airport.

Frequently asked questions about this tour

How to get to the Lyngen Alps from Tromsø?

The Lyngen Alps are about 40km east of the city of Tromsø. You need a boat to access the Norwegian sea coastline or a car to drive out to the small village of Lyngseidet, less than 2hr drive from Tromsø Airport (including a ferry ride!). Lyngseidet is a good land-based location from which to experience Lyngen Alps skiing.

What is the weather like in the Lyngen Alps in winter?

The Lyngen Alps offer mild and stable winter conditions due to the proximity to the ocean. The average temperature is around 0°C/32°F. It is often cooler in the mountains and in the shade but during the sunny days on the boat or beach, you can expect highs of 5-6°C/41-43°F. Mild winds mean calm seas with almost no waves which makes life on the ship very comfortable. Light winds also mean great visibility, no windchill and less wind-loading or packed snow.
